When Old Insulation Has to Go
Insulation removal and replacement is the right call when what is in the attic is causing problems. Insulation soaked by an old roof leak, packed with droppings, smoke-damaged or moldy cannot simply be covered with more. It also blocks access to the attic floor, so air sealing cannot happen until it is gone.
Removal
We use a high-powered vacuum system to pull loose fill out of the attic into collection bags outside, keeping it out of the living space. Batts are bagged by hand. The attic floor is cleaned so every gap can be seen and sealed.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite is a pebbly, gray-brown or gold loose fill found in some older homes. The EPA advises assuming it may contain asbestos and not disturbing it; it should be tested and, if needed, removed by an asbestos abatement contractor. If we find it, we stop and tell you.
Replacement
After removal and sealing, we install new blown-in insulation or foam to the target R-value, usually R-49 or R-60 for attics in this zone.
