Attics That Hold the Heat
Attic insulation is the most common job we do, because heat rises and most older attics in the area are thin. Many hold a few inches of rock wool or settled cellulose, well below the R-49 that Ohio's code lists for Zone 5A ceilings or the R-60 ENERGY STAR suggests for empty attics in existing homes.
Air sealing comes first
Insulation slows heat moving through the ceiling but does little to stop air moving through holes. We seal the gaps first: top plates of interior walls, holes for wires and pipes, chimney and flue chases (with metal and fire-rated sealant), recessed lights, the hatch and any open wall bays.
Then the insulation
On an open attic floor, blown-in cellulose or fiberglass is the usual choice. It fills around joists and wiring and reaches high R-values at modest cost. We leave depth markers. Where the attic holds ducts or a furnace, or the ceiling is vaulted, spray foam on the underside of the roof may be the better option.
Ventilation
Baffles at the eaves keep soffit vents clear. Bath fans should vent outside, not into the attic; we reroute them when needed.

Attic Insulation Questions
What R-value should my attic have?
Ohio's code lists R-49 for Zone 5A ceilings; ENERGY STAR suggests R-60 for an empty attic in an existing home.
Why seal before insulating?
Air leaks carry heat and moisture past insulation. Sealing makes the insulation work.
Can you add insulation over old insulation?
Usually yes, if the old material is dry and clean.
How long does it take?
Most attics are done in a day.
